Security Alert: U.S. Embassy Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) (11 February, 2024)

Location: Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)

Event: The U.S. Embassy in Kinshasa alerts U.S. citizens that protests throughout the city of Kinshasa are likely to continue Monday, February 12, 2024.  Protests this past week have occurred at foreign embassies, international organization offices, and foreign-owned businesses.

Protesters are targeting foreigners living in Kinshasa and other major cities, diplomats, and employees of international organizations and their vehicles.  The Embassy advises U.S. Citizens to keep a low profile and limit their movements.  Expect an increased police presence and heavier traffic in Kinshasa and other major cities.

The Consular Section will be closed to routine services on Monday, February 12, 2024.  The consular section notified those with appointments on Monday to reschedule.

Actions to Take:

  • S. citizens are reminded that demonstrations that may start peacefully have the potential to turn violent with little to no warning, and they are advised to avoid large gatherings, protests, and affected areas.

  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Monitor local media for updates.
  • Review your personal security plans and ensure your family has enough food and water should you need to stay home for several days.
  • Keep a low profile.
