American Shelves

Overview

These are smaller than American Corners and they are subject to the local American Center Staff, under the supervision of the Embassy’s Public Affairs Section (PAS). Moreover, American Shelves are effective when a Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) is concluded between the said Embassy’s Section (PAS) and the host-institutions; and they are also subject to respect the Mission’s Goals through the 5 core-Programs aforementioned.

The U.S. Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, H.E. Michael A. Hammer, inaugurated an American Shelf in Goma, Saturday, March 9, 2019.  It is located at the Congo Peace Network NGO – 42, Bunagana Street, District of Katindo in Goma (Eastern DRC). The American Shelf Goma is a joint partnership between the U.S. Embassy’s Public Affairs Section and Congo Peace Network. As with other types of American spaces, this shelf offers computers connected to the internet and book collections designed to improve mutual understanding between the peoples of the United States and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. On-line reference searching enhances the ability of the shelf to provide the most up-to-date information to patrons. It is a place for U.S. State Department exchange programs alumni, students, and the general public to conduct research and participate in special events. American Shelf patrons may include, among others, community member researchers who are interested in finding information on American social sciences, teachers, academics, and students researching American history, culture, values and language.

Note: All the activities/programs at the American Shelf Goma are open to the public and free of charge to patrons.

Operation Days and Hours

The Shelf is open to the public from Monday to Friday, 0800 – 1600.
